It's finally here! The first interview of the School of Thought Podcast features a conversation with Eric Smith. Eric Smith is a high school social studies teacher in Glendora, California. Eric and Ryan became friends in 2012 when Ryan was a long-term substitute teacher at Glendora High School and they have remained friends ever since.
Eric is a great example of the School of Thought philosophy as he has carried on a simultaneous career as a sports announcer for Los Angeles-based sports teams. He is the current stadium announcer for the Los Angeles Clippers and USC Trojans football. He also spent 14 years as the stadium announcer for the Los Angeles Dodgers. His experience in education and sports media has given him some interesting insights on leadership, communication, and education.
Matt Murdock was unable to be present for this interview so this conversation just features the voices of Eric and Ryan. In our wide-ranging conversation, we talked about Eric's time in broadcasting, having a bias as a teacher, the role of failure in education, the culture Eric tries to create in his classroom, how he keeps things fresh after teaching for many years, and being real in front of the class. You can reach Eric Smith by emailing him at firstname.lastname@example.org.
All our podcasts are available on SoundCloud and the iTunes Store. There are two versions of each podcast! The long-form interviews lasts about one hour and features a lengthy introduction, most of the conversation, and a wrap-up with Ryan and Matt. The Shortcuts version is for those people who are too busy for an hour-long podcast or just want to get to the more practical insights. Choose how you want to listen!
